BACERS: Story and Pics from the OCI Foundation-Inspired Medical Students’ CPR Training in Nigeria’s Katsina Stage Event (22/02/25)

The National Association of Katsina State Medical Students (NAKAMS) has organised an OCI Foundation-inspired “Basic Life Support Training” for tertiary institution students.

The program, hosted by NAKAMS at the Students Centre Theatre, Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), Katsina, Nigeria, was spearheaded by Mr Abubakar Ismail Muhammad (of the Bayero University Medical School, Kano State, Nigeria) who finished 6th in the 2024 Edition of the OCI Foundation’s Nigeria National LAMS (Literary Awards for Medical Students) Essay Competition.

The 2024 LAMS was focused on a new OCI Foundation initiative called “The BACERS” (Basic Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Response Strategies).

BACERS is designed to optimise knowledge levels and basic skills required by Nigerians during life-threatening emergencies. The ultimate aim is to reduce the frequency of needless deaths resulting from sudden collapses, accidents and other unfortunate incidents.

A full rollout of BACERS is expected across Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT within the next 12 to 24 months, and the OCI Foundation is currently engaging stakeholders in this regard.

A minimum of 50% of all targeted Nigerians are expected to gain the required knowledge and skills within two years of BACERS roll-out, with 75% achieving the same results in five years.
