The Wife of the Benue Governor, Dr Eunice Ortom said she will establish a cancer centre in the State soon. Mrs. Ortom disclosed this recently in Makurdi when the members of the Onyebuchi Chris Ifediora (OCI) Foundation paid her a visit. She said that her NGO which is Eunice Spring of Life Foundation (ESLF) would be the one to establish it.
“We have acquired 10 hectares of land for this purpose.
“I know that the project is capital intensive but I am not going to relent until I achieve my aim.
“We are still talking to potential partners and we believe God that our efforts will certain come to fruition.
“I am very passionate about this. I lost my mother to cancer when I was a teenager. So, each time I hear of the disease it remains me of the death of my mother.
“It is as a result of this that my foundation is supporting cancer patients. Right now we have 30 of the cancer patients that my foundation is assisting in order to access medical care. It is our desire to save lives,” she said.
She further promised to partner with OCI so as to enable it drive its health campaign on cancer to the nooks and crannies of the state.
Earlier, Leader of the delegation, Barr. Steve Ononye, said that it was the desire of the foundation that preventive measures of cancer be incorporated into secondary schools curriculum.
“This will help the young people to know the dangers of the disease and how to prevent or control it.
“Anambra has embraced the initiative and cancer awareness is being taught in all the 261 schools there. It is now in their Curriculum and it is now included in Civic Education,” he said.
Also, the Benue Anchor person of OCI, Mr Sam Agwa, appealed to the wife of the governor to sell the initiative to other governor’s wives so as to replicate it in their various States for the overall good of the society.
