Dr Onyebuchi Ifediora, Founder, Onyebuchi Chris Ifediora (OCI) Foundation says well improved teaching and learning environment will help to curb cases of examination malpractices in schools.

Ifediora stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Onitsha on Thursday while speaking on plans by the Foundation to award scholarships to 32 students in Anambra.

“Our standard of education in Nigeria is poor, but we can do better as a country if funding of schools is improved to facilitate provision of basic and necessary materials for teaching and learning.

“Our universities are underfunded. Our secondary schools and primary schools are all equally underfunded.

“The staffs are poorly motivated due to poor pay packages and limited opportunities for professional developments.

“This accounts for the increasing cases of examination malpractices which had continued to result in the fall in our educational standards.

“Unfortunately, these malpractices are aided, in some instances, by examination officials themselves, the parents, the teachers, and of course, the students,” he said.

According to him, majority of students are generally eager to work hard, if given the right environment and support, which is why Nigerian students excel whenever they find themselves in countries with sound educational systems.

Ifediora called for adequate training of teachers across all levels as well as provision of adequate study environments and materials for students.

On its part, Ifediora said the foundation it will award scholarship to 22 students under the IFOMSSA Junior and Secondary Awards and 10 students under the Cyfed undergraduate scholarship programme this year.

“We believe that a motivated mind can surmount impossible obstacles and can create limitless opportunities.

“We at the OCI Foundation know this, and through our scholarships, we aim to motivate our youths and instill in them the hunger to compete, excel and take advantage of opportunities as they present to them.

“We identify academically-gifted but financially-disadvantaged scholars, and assist them to achieve their dreams because we believe that, among them are doctors, engineers, lawyers, bankers, and entrepreneurs of tomorrow,” he said. (NAN).
