Prof Kate Azuka Omenugha

Prof Kate Azuka Omenugha is the Honourable Commissioner for Basic Education in Anambra State, Nigeria. She studied in both Nigeria and the United Kingdom, clinching diverse degrees in Education, English, Communication, Gender and Cultural Studies. She graduated with a Distinction at the College of Education Nsugbe, Nigeria (1981-83), and later went to the University of Nigeria for her first degree in Education/English (1987) and second degree in Mass Communication (1998). Thereafter, she obtained a PhD in Gender, Media and Cultural Studies (2005) from the University of Gloucestershire, United Kingdom.
Prof Omenugha has also been a passionate, vibrant teacher and academic, having taught for many years in multiple secondary schools, rising to the rank of a Vice Principal before she joined University teaching. She was Head, Department of Mass Communication, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nigeria, from 2006 to 2012. Within those years she brought phenomenal changes and growth in the department, which included obtaining the first full accreditation for the department, as well as the take-off of “UNIZIK 94.1 FM” – the campus radio station, which would later become the best Campus Radio station in Nigeria in 2013.
To her credit, Prof. Kate Omenugha has over seventy (70) book chapters, journal articles, conference papers, solicited papers, technical reports, books and monographs, which have been published both locally and internationally. She has served as advisor and external examiner for Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes in over 15 Universities, within and outside Nigeria, and her expertise has been useful in the assessment of academics to the rank of professors.
As the Honourable Commissioners for Education (2014 – 2018) and Basic Education (2018 and ongoing), Prof. Omenugha has been vital in revolutionizing education in Anambra State. She has brought passion, integrity and entrepreneurial spirit into the education sector, with teachers and students from the winning many laurels at national and international competitions under her.
It therefore comes as no surprise that she has continued to gain national and international recognitions. She was adjudged the Best Performing Commissioner in 2015, and also received the Entrepreneur Award by the United Nations in New York (November, 2015). In 2018, as one best performing executives In Anambra State of Nigeria, she was sponsored alongside three others to study at the Harvard University, where she obtained a training certificate on Leadership in Development. In November 2016, she received a letter of appreciation and commendation from the West African Examination Council.
Prof Omenugha has been invited as a resource person in many educational programmes at both national and international levels. She was one of the speakers in the British Education Training and Technology (BETT) 2017 in Abu Dhabi in April 2017, and, in January 2019, she participated in the Education World Forum by the British Council in the United Kingdom as part of the Nigeria delegation.
Prof. Kate Omenugha places great emphasis on hard work, integrity in leadership, service to the people, good morals and strong family values. She is happily married to a medical doctor in rural practice, and is blessed with six grown-up children.
