The Anambra State Government in a determined bid to improve public health care services, in the State has renovated 63 primary health centers in the 21 Local Government Areas of the state.
The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano, stated this at Umueri, Anambra East Local Government Area of the state during a health awareness campaign on breast and cervical cancer organized by Onyebuchi Chris Ifediora (OCI) Foundation for secondary students in Otuocha Zone of Anambra State school system.
Mrs. Obiano, who was represented at the occasion held at Stella Maris Girls Secondary school, Umueri by the Executive secretary, Anambra State Primary Health Care Services, Dr. (Mrs.) Chioma Eze- Enyimalu, said the staffing and facilities of the health centers have equally been significantly improved.
She said cancer has no cUre, but advised that it can be prevented through early detection of the symptoms, stressing that is the reason the state Government holds public health care services as a priority sector.
Obiano’s wife commended the sponsors of the programme, and described the project as a good initiative, since prevention was better than cure.
In her speech, the state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Kate Omenugha, said the symposium was in line with the State Government’s safe school interactive aimed at heaping a healthy environment, where learning can thrive.
She urged the students to take the symposium serious and should not shy away from telling their parents about any health challenge they notice in their system.
The president and founder of OCI, Dr. Chris Ifediora, who was represented by his legal advisers, Onyechi Ononye, said that the symposium organized in partnership with the Foundation for Health Development (FHDN) was aimed at creating a society where everyone would be empowered to take control of his/ her health irrespective of status.
Dr. Ifediora, a medical director based in Australia but hails from Nsugbe, Anambra East local Government Area, said the symposium was the first of the many steps in actualizing her dream of knocking off barriers to the attainment of good and affordable health for all.
The founder said they may not have the financial and political muscle to create or implement major health policies that can affect millions of Nigeria but the foundation was committed, and has the skills to empower people so that they can take control of their health issues.
He said the project would be extended from the present three local governments of Anambra East, West and Ayamelum that constituted Otuocha zone to the rest of Anambra state and other parts of Nigeria and Africa.
Others who eulogized the initiative were the chairman of the occasion, Mrs. Sandra Ogbuagu, the planning committee chairman, Mrs., Imelda Emeka, who is also the Zonal Director, Post Primary School System (PPSCC), Otuocha Zone, Dr. Emmanuel Azuike, as well as the students.
