A non-profit organisation, Onyebuchi Chris Ifediora (OCI) Foundation has awarded scholarships to 52 indigent junior and senior secondary school students in Anambra to assist them achieve their academic goals.
The beneficiaries were selected from various public schools in Anambra East, Anambra West and Ayamelum Local Government Areas under the foundation’s Ifedioramma Okafor Memorial Secondary School Academic (IFOMSSA) Awards.
Presenting the awards weekend at Fr. Joseph Memorial Secondary School, Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area, OCI Founder, Dr Chris Ifediora said the annual event was the fourth in series.
Ifediora, who was represented by the Legal Adviser to the Foundation, Mr Steve Ononye, said a total of 124 students had so far benefited from the scholarship scheme since 2017.
“The beneficiaries all underwent a one-off examination called the IFOMSSA Challenge, which was held on Jan. 27 before they were selected.
“The 37 Junior Award winners are all Nsugbe indigenes enrolled at the Community High School, Nsugbe while the 15 senior category beneficiaries were selected across the three Local Governments Areas, ” he said.
Ifediora said the aim of implementing the awards was to motivate young ones and spur students from the Omambala Area of Anambra toward the attainment of greater academic successes.
“The OCI foundation wishes to give our younger ones the opportunity to bridge the gap between riches and poverty, and to arm them with the tools with which they will overcome failures and attain successes,” he added.
He said besides the IFOMSSA Junior and Senior Awards, the foundation also offered the JAMB Awards, Cyfed Undergraduate Scholarships, and the Cyfed-Bradley Hope Scholarships.
In a remark, Mrs Victoria Unegbu, the Zonal Director of Education, Post Primary Secondary School Commission (PPSSC), Otuocha zone commended the foundation for the gesture.
She advised the beneficiaries to also build good morals and discipline to brighten their future.
Also, Mrs Imelda Emeka, the Liaison Officer of the Foundation said the foundation also had the health arm which focused on raising awareness on cervical and breast cancers.
Emeka said the foundation had succeeded in including the teaching in school curriculum in Anambra and was currently liaising with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on the campaign.
Two beneficiaries, Miss Chinenye Chris and Master Obiorah Chukwuemeka commended the foundation for the scholarships and prayed for God’s continued blessings on the foundation’s founder.
15 beneficiaries for the senior category received N30, 000 each to augment their WAEC and NECO fees while the 37 junior students got N5,000 each for their Junior WAEC fees.
