1. VANGUARD: Aisha Buhari declares support for fight against cancer (05/02/22)

First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, has tasked cancer stakeholders to exact more effort in creating awareness of the terminal disease.

She made the call at the “National Flag-off of the Arm our Youths (ArOY) Anti-cancer Health Campaign with the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC.”

Aisha who was represented by wife of the Vice President, Dolapo Osinbajo, said it is pertinent to ensure that everything possible is done to reduce the rate of mortality associated with the disease  especially breast and cervical cancer.

Arising from this, she declared her support in the fight against cancer, saying that new initiatives are needed to aid cancer campaigns.

“My future assured initiative has been at the forefront of this campaign over the years, creating awareness, screening and making referrals across the country.

“This campaign has reached thousands of members including those in hard-to-reach areas. I intend to do more and partner with more organisations such as Nigerian Cancer Society and OCI foundation until we overcome the negative health outcomes associated with cancer.

“On this note I wish to declare my support in the fight against all forms of cancer. I wish to also use this medium to call on cancer stakeholders to exact more effort in awareness creation amongst our citizens. It is also important to come up with new ideas such as cascading this campaign to Secondary schools,” she stated.

Speaking also, Director-General, NYSC, Brigadier-General Shuaibu Ibrahim, commended the Onyebuchi Chris Ifediora, OCI Foundation for its efforts in collaborating with relevant stakeholders on cancer awareness.

Ibrahim who was represented by the Director, Corp Mobilisation for NYSC, Victoria Ango, said: “It is gratifying to note that the partnership between the OCI Foundation and the NYSC (corps members) for awareness on cancer would not have come at a better time than now. The awareness might, among other things, reduce medical tourism and conserve the hard-earned foreign currency of Nigerians.

“Thus, creating awareness to enable Nigeria prevent or better manage this ailment is quite commendable. The NYSC is far more determined than you can imagine to carry out the awareness to all the nooks and crannies of Nigeria.”

In his remarks, Founder, OCI Foundation, Chris Ifediora, explained that the ArOY health campaign offers an innovative approach to stemming the scourge of breast and cervical cancer amongst Nigerians.

According to him, the organization is seeking partnership with the First Lady and her non-governmental organisations as well as the current Nigerian legislature to expedite the project with Nigerian senior secondary schools.

“The technological components of the campaign relate to how innovations that the OCI foundation is making available to Nigerians, for free and the first is the CerviBreast App, a free and interactive mobile phone application that will assist in keeping track of breast and cervical cancer screening,” he said.

Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, on Thursday, declared war on cancer in Abuja, with a pledge to work with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and Onyenbuchi Chris Ifediora Foundation (OCI).

Mrs Buhari made the promise during the official flag-off ceremony of the Arm Our Youths Anti Cancer Health Campaign.

In her speech, she said her support for the NYSC/OCI anti-cancer awareness campaign and any other organisation or Non-Governmental Organisations that are involved in the fight against cancer.

She said: “On this note I wish to declare my support in the fight against all forms of cancer. I wish to also use this medium to call on cancer stakeholders to exact more effort in awareness creation amongst our citizens. Director General of NYSC, Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, said “as long as health is one of the cardinal programmes of the scheme, the scheme will take the awareness campaign to all the corners of the country.”

Speaking through the Director Corps Mobilisation, Victoria Ango, he said: “Health service to community is one of the cardinal programmes which occupy the heart of the DG.

Wife of the President Hajia Aisha Buhari, has expressed concerns over the negative health outcomes associated with cancer, calling on stakeholders to channel more efforts towards its eradication  in the country.

Buhari made the call in her address at the official flag-off ceremony of the Arm Our Youths Anti-Cancer Health campaign with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) organised by the Onyebuchi Chris Ifediora (OCI) Foundation with the theme: “Using technology as a game-changing weapon for Nigeria youths in the fight against breast and cervical cancers” Thursday,  in Abuja.

Represented by Wife of the Vice President, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo, she said, “It is important to ensure that we do everything possible to reduce the rate of mortality associated with cancer especially cervical.

“My future assured initiative has been at the forefront of this campaign over the years, creating awareness, screening and making referrals across the country.

“This campaign has reached thousands of members including those in hard to reach areas. I intend to do more and partner with more organisations such as Nigerian Cancer Society and OCI foundation until we overcome the negative health outcomes associated with cancer,” she said.

Earlier, the Director General (DG) of the NYSC Maj.-Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim, represented by the Director Corp Mobilisation Victoria  Ango, stressed the importance of awareness creation, stating that “this might, among other things, reduce medical tourism and conserve the hard-earned foreign currency of Nigerians.

In his welcome address, the founder and president of the OCI Foundation, Professor Chris Ifediora,  stated that it’s health promotion Initiative primarily seeks to introduce anti-breast and cervical cancer programmes into the NYSC’s orientation across the country.

He added that it also aims to include preventive teachings into the the academic curriculum of all senior  secondary schools in the 36 states and the FCT by 2025.

“The ArOY health campaign offers an innovative approach to stemming the scourge of breast and cervical cancers among Nigerians.

High point of the campaign was the unveiling of the first CerviBreast App which is a free and interactive mobile phone application that will assist in keeping track of breast and cervical cancer screenings, and the Gynocular project, which provides free and highly subsidized digital cervical cancer screenings to Nigerians.

“This will help Nigerians locate breast and cervical cancer service providers, from anywhere in the country,” he said.

“It is a programme supported by WHO and endorsed by the prestigious Harvard Medical School, USA as well as institutions in Australia, Canada and Sweden.

“The campaign seeks to introduce anti-breast and anti-cervical programme into the NYSC orientation activities across Nigeria.

“It also aims to include preventive teachings into the academic curriculum of all Senior Secondary Schools in Nigeria’s 36 state of the federation and the FCT before the end of 2025.

“The programme with the NYSC is expected to commence with the Batch A of the 2022 corps members, which should be within a few weeks from now.

“We have already trained over 95 per cent of the personnel needed, and these include staff of NYSC and the Nigerian Cancer Society across the 36 States and FCT,” Ifediora said.

The event attracted officials from the Presidency, National Assembly,  NYSC, HMS, FLAC, National Orientation Agency, Ministry of Women Affairs, , NCS, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Cancer Survivors, Secondary School Students, teachers amomg others.
